The LVS works on the principle of comparing empty scans and load scans for the same vehicle to compute the load volume. The scanning process allows the system to build up a 3D model or 'surface profile' of the target vehicle. By comparing the profile of a loaded vehicle with the profile of the same vehicle when empty, a 'load profile' can be established. Load volume is mathematically computed from the load profile.
Technology
Invisible infra-red laser beams emitted from the Scan Head scan the surface of the target vehicle as it drives below. These beams reflect off the target and return to the Scan Head, providing distance measurements. The system computer generates and records a 3D model from the measurement data, automates the scanning process and performs the mathematical computations required to compute load volume.
